On the 20th of February, 2020, the International Business Department of Independent University and the International Independent Business Forum (IIBF) organized an industry tour. Nortex Textile Mills Ltd. was the company assigned for this tour, which is a subsidiary of Bashar Group of Industries.
Nortex Textile Mills Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of high quality yarn and blended fabrics, importing cotton from some of the world’s leading cotton producers (i.e., Brazil, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan) and supplying yarn to a large number of export oriented local garments’ companies for meeting their global clientele needs.
A group of 28 students majoring in international business in the BBA program and also active members of the IIBF (IIBF) joined the tour. Dr. Tareq Mahbub and Mr. SM Yusuf Mallick accompanied the students. The journey started at 10.30 a.m. from the IUB premises moving towards Gazipur and ending at Bhaluka, Mymensingh. The students were greeted at the gate of the Nortex Textile Mills Ltd. by the company personnel and then taken inside the plant. The General Manager of the plant welcomed the faculties and the students. Then a detailed plant tour started beginning with the sourcing of the raw material (i.e., cotton) through the various stages of yarn processing to the final product in its finished form (i.e., yarn cones) including packaging and delivery. The students walked through the plant floor observing the various stages of production, having orientation with the step by step processing activities including a look at the various state-of-the-art machineries (i.e., mostly from the European manufacturers) for high quality yarn production in the workings of a full-fledged vertically oriented plant (with a minimum manpower). The manufacturing processes were in sync with the latest production techniques and global quality requirements.
During the plant tour the students got to ask a lot of questions about the process technologies used in this plant and got a first-hand view of various documents required for order processing and delivery. This included letter of credit (LC), invoices, shipping documents and packing lists in line with international business requirements. The program ended by presenting a crest as a token of appreciation to the General Manager for accommodating the IUB team and help facilitating a very informative and memorable plant tour.
