This is to inform you that Dr. Rushdi M. R. Razzaque has published a research paper titled “Real earnings management in family firms: Evidence from an emerging economy” in Pacific-Basin Finance Journal (an “A” ranked journal by the Australian Business Deans Council). His study provides evidence that family owned firms alter real business activities, which results in real earnings management, to report higher earnings more compared to non-family owned firms in Bangladesh. This study shows that the relationship between family ownership and level of real earnings management is non-monotonic. The magnitude of real earnings management intensifies within the 25% to 30% threshold of family equity ownership, and beyond this range it tends to decline. Moreover, the study concludes that real earnings management is an exhibition of opportunistic managerial behavior associated with negative performance consequences in the future period. This paper is of high relevance for corporate governance issues in the Bangladesh context. Dr. Razzaque is currently an assistant professor & Head of the Department of Accounting, School of Business at Independent University, Bangladesh.
